A shed is typically a single storied structure which is typically simple. There are many uses of sheds such as a workshop. One of the main reasons for using sheds is storage. Different things can be stored in the sheds. Sizes of sheds depend on where they are used like for e.g. sheds used in industries or in large farms are usually large in structure while the sheds used in back gardens are comparatively smaller. There are three types of sheds they are:
* Small Domestic sheds
* Larger Domestic sheds and
* Other Specific usage sheds

Out of these three the most simple and inexpensive is Small domestic sheds and they are specially used for garden storage. In this both "do-it-yourself" plans and shed kits available for wooden and plastic sheds. They are used to store garden tools and home tools and equipment such as lawn tractors, push lawn mowers, and other such gardening supplies. In addition, sheds can be used to store products or items that are not suitable for indoor storage, such as pesticides, gasoline, or herbicides. There are several types of very small sheds for homes with small gardens or modest storage needs. These include vertical sheds (5' tall x 3' wide x 4' deep), corner sheds, which fit into a corner (3' tall x 3' wide x 2' deep), horizontal sheds (3' tall x 5' wide x 4' deep), and even tool sheds. Shelves and hooks are often used to maximize the storage space, when a shed is used for tool storage. To increase storage space in the loft usage of Gambrel-style roof sheds must be done. This style resembles a Dutch-style barn have a high sloping so space is more in this shed. Saltbox-style shed is another style of small sheds which can also be used for garden storage.

Larger domestic sheds are constructed typically of wood and can carry other accessories with it also such as a shingled roof, windows, and electrical outlets. Larger sheds provide more space for hobbies such as small engine repair, or tinkering or gardening. Furniture can also be put in it to make it more decorative. Medium sized wooden garden sheds can also be used as outdoor offices. To make the garden sheds match with the surrounding one can also add other decorative options such as shutters, flowerboxes, dormers, finials, and weathervanes. Benches, ramps, ventilation systems, and electric lighting are some of the other practical options which can be considered.

Garden sheds are the vast majority of sheds. First of all the sheds they include allotment sheds. Sheds specially designed for gardening are known as potting sheds. Besides potting sheds there are also tool sheds. Potting sheds include different features such as ventilation grilles, windows or skylights for illumination, and a potter's bench for mixing soil and re-potting plants. These features can be added only if the garden is big enough. Most of the gardens are too small so for them a single shed is suitable.
